TL;DR

Helping startup CFOs stay on top of their finances with a personalized, AI-driven dashboard

I designed a dynamic, personalized dashboard for CFOs at startups that are clients of a large commercial and investment bank. This dashboard helps them maintain an oversight into company's numbers as well as reduce the cognitive effort that goes into identifying and prioritizing what needs attention.

CONTEXT

Designing for CFOs: High Stakes, Little Time

This was part of Phase 2 of a personalization initiative at a large commercial and investment bank. The goal was to design a dashboard specifically for CFOs at startups that bank with them, since their day-to-day revolves around financial decision-making for their company.

The User Group

CFOs don't do bookkeeping. They focus on the bigger picture, whether the company's financial trajectory and growth are on track or not. Their role comes with high stakes: they're constantly meeting with board members and making decisions that affect the company's direction. Because of this, they rarely spend more than 10 minutes on a tool at a time. What they need is a quick snapshot of the company's current numbers and growth, along with the few things that need immediate attention.

PROBLEM

Too much financial data, too little time to make sense of it

CFOs have plenty of financial data, but fragmented information and limited time make it difficult to quickly understand the bigger picture, identify what matters, and decide what needs attention. This cognitive effort takes time away from their higher-value, strategic responsibilities.

For users, this means

Fragmented information

Data is scattered across multiple tools.

Cognitive Overload

Too much data makes sense-making difficult.

Synthesis effort

Understanding the bigger picture requires connecting sources.

Attention required

Identifying important issues takes time and effort.

SOLUTION

Bringing scattered data together to make financial insights easier to digest, prioritize and act on

A dashboard designed to help CFOs stay on top of their company’s finances. It brings together three key sections: an overview of what needs attention, a snapshot of the company’s current financials, and a complete log of AI-generated insights. Each section supports a different part of the CFO’s decision-making process, moving from what needs attention first, to where the business stands today, to everything else worth knowing.

Overview: What Needs Attention Right Now

A dynamic dashboard that surfaces what matters most. Rather than overwhelming CFOs with every detail, it highlights only the items that need attention, with the highest-priority issue surfaced first. AI-driven insights continuously identify critical items, helping CFOs quickly understand what needs their attention and where to act first.

Company Summary: Where the Numbers Live

This is where the current financial data lives, giving CFOs a clear view of the company’s financial trajectory. The data-rich dashboard brings together the KPIs and metrics they need to understand performance, track changes, and make informed financial decisions.

Six KPI cards give CFOs an instant pulse-check on financial performance. Each pairs a metric with a relevant comparison, making it easy to understand movement at a glance. Color coding further helps CFOs quickly scan what’s performing well and what needs attention.

The centerpiece is a burn bar chart that makes actual performance against plan easy to read at a glance. The overlaid lines show whether spending is tracking above or below the expected path, while annotations add context to unusual spikes and help distinguish one-time events from meaningful trends.

Users can expand the chart to trace where the data comes from and click any bar to explore that month’s details. Every number has a traceable source, making it easy to investigate the data and deep dive into the company’s finances.

Budgets

A snapshot of planned budget and actual spends, and showing how spending is distributed across departments. It gives CFOs a quick view of the overall allocation and where the budget is going.

Other Features

AI-driven insights surface trends and predictions, prioritizing what matters most so CFOs can quickly understand what needs attention and take action.

An AI assistant lets CFOs explore any area, insight, or question in depth. It also recommends relevant resources to help them understand emerging trends and prepare for what’s ahead.

OUTCOME

Making financial health instantly clear and actionable

This dashboard is currently in the design/prototype phase and hasn't launched to CFOs yet. A desired outcome would look like a CFO opening the Company Summary page and, within seconds, correctly stating their cash runway, whether they're on or off plan, and which department needs attention, without clicking into a single drill-down. Success would also show up in this page becoming a habit: CFOs returning to it on their own, not because someone told them to check it.

Time on task

How long it takes a CFO to answer "am I on plan?"

Task success rate

% of CFOs who correctly state runway, burn trend, and top-variance department without drilling down

Drill-down rate

how often CFOs need to dig deeper instead of getting what they need from the top-level view

Return rate

whether CFOs come back to this page on their own, without being prompted
